And for those of you that love blueberries, this is going to be a match made in heaven.
Many of you will know Curio Spirits for their distinctive gins and artisan vodka, distilled on the wild reaches of the Lizard Peninsula, but what you might not know is that their Blueberry Gin has just scooped a prestigious award at this year’s Great British Food Awards 2019.
Beating a long line of rival distillers from across the UK, Curio’s Bluberry Gin took home the gold in the competitive Flavoured Gin category, judged by chef and owner of Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, Raymond Blanc OBE.
With so many flavoured gins now available on our doorstep, the win highlighted the skill, dedication and precision to taste that Curio put into their products, as well as showcasing the impressive produce that’s available in Cornwall. As one of Curio’s latest creations, their Blueberry Gin came from the minds of owners William and Rubina Tyler-Street and is distilled with blueberries from a former Cornish monastery, taking its water from the Cornish moorlands in a private borehole high on Bodmin Moor.
Of the winning gin, Raymond Blanc OBE said, “The gin has a strong blueberry flavour that’s not too sweet. It has a delicate hint of lime to make it a fresh and enjoyable drink.”
Typical of Curio’s style, the team often look to their local environment to see what botanicals they can harvest for their flavours, the blueberries originated from Bonallack, just a few miles inland from their coastal distillery in the upper reaches of the Helford River. A Time Team dig in 2002 revealed 12th century settlements as well as also finding existence of blueberry cultivation and other vaccinium. Now, Curio has restarted this once ancient local practice, pairing it with a modern twist of their own. Curio alchemist and chief distiller William explains, “A lot of passion has gone into Curio Blueberry Gin. The spring water is naturally filtered through granite and has an authentic, neat effervescence, leaving a crispness on the tongue.”
It’s no wonder this gin was a big hit at the Great British Food Awards, and certainly a deserving win,
“We couldn’t be more delighted to bring this award home to Cornwall,” says Rubina, “it’s the only competition we entered this year and we felt the Great British Food Magazine was a good fit!”
Smooth, flavourful and packed with personality, Curio’s Blueberry Gin can be sipped neat over ice or with your favourite tonic. So if you’re a gin lover, or have someone in the family who is, this is definitely a gin you’re going to want to try this Christmas!
