Despite just graduating from university, 21-year-old Tristan Wynne is already putting his degree in Business Management from Kingston Business School to good use, by setting up his own contemporary market in St Ives that aims to take your typical farmer’s market and bring it into a modern era. Say hello to Emporium.
Now in its second year, Emporium began in the spring of 2018, when Tristan devised the event and the ethos behind it whilst on a placement year for a local brand development agency.
“I had always wanted to set up my own business and I’m very passionate about branding and design. When visiting a few local markets last winter, I saw a gap for something a bit more contemporary.”
Described by Tristan as a ‘marvellously modern market for the masses’ Emporium prides itself on contemporary design and innovative products. From beers and gins to modern art and up-cycled goods, Emporium is aimed all ages, bringing the entire community of locals and tourists together to support local Cornish businesses as Tristan explains here,
“Emporium is all about creating a fun, dynamic and vibrant atmosphere by bringing together some of the most modern brands, who set up brilliant displays of their products all together in one room. It’s about celebrating that talent and innovation.”
“Last year’s event went really well,” he continues, “I had a great response from all of my traders and we had a lot of customers on the day. Traders were particularly pleased with the atmosphere created, which they were a huge part of!”
Attention to detail, a warm and welcoming atmosphere and a wide range of high-quality products contributed to Emporium’s initial success. So much so that this year Emporium is returning to St Ives’ Guildhall twice in August, on Saturday 24th.
“The event will follow the same format as last year,” Tristan says, “we are looking to increase focus on marketing to attract even more final customers on the day. I am also planning on making last year’s popular Instagram prize draw even more irresistible than last year. Also, whilst we had so much variety in our products last year, there is always scope to add more and more – so I hope to attract an even wider range of traders this year.”
Food, art, craft, jewellery and clothing all with a contemporary flair will be filling the St Ives Guildhall. Walk from stall to stall and find everything from print artwork to artisan chocolate, locally crafted beer to colourful beaded jewellery. Ultimately for Tristan, the events are about showcasing local producers to the public and providing a platform for new and emerging creatives to offer their products alongside like-minded folk.
“The more markets available to small businesses, the less need for them to take investment risks, I honestly feel like I am helping small businesses by organising markets, as it provides them with an opportunity to not only sell their products, but to meet new people who are interested in hearing their story.”
A welcomed, fresh addition to the craft market scene, Emporium is a contemporary fair that is giving a voice to a new generation of makers and creatives. This is certainly a craft market we are excited to watch develop.
The Emporium Market will be running at the St Ives Guildhall on the 24th of August, 9am – 3pm. Click here to follow their Instagram page to keep up with the latest

DON’T FORGET THERE’S PRIZES UP FOR GRABS TOO!
One highlight of Emporium is the very popular Instagram Prize Draw. Last year, the winner of the draw won a hamper full of over 20 Cornish goodies, worth over £200. The prize included cupcakes, artwork, gin, rum, flowers, accessories and cider, all kindly provided by the traders of the Emporium show. Expect an even bigger prize for both events this year!
